Electricity - plug layout
daniel Fri, 03/08/2013 - 7:37am
Looking at the plug, hot is on the right, neutral is on the left, ground is on the bottom.
Neutral is the longer slot on some plugs.
If you are looking at an uninstalled outlet, hot is the brass colored terminal, while neutral is the silver one.

RTH7400D1008 Honeywell Programmable Thermostat, set the date
daniel Fri, 11/30/2012 - 10:25am
I'm not sure how it occurred, but, the day was off on my thermostat. A quick call to Honeywell's Tech support resolved the issue quite quickly. Here are the steps:
- Select System
- Press and Hold Fan
- Should see 0120 with setting 20 blinking
- Press next to 0130, this is the year
- Press next to 0140, this is the month
- Press next to 0150, this is the day
- Press Done.
You should be good now :-)

Excellent usecase for bittorrent
daniel Mon, 05/21/2012 - 10:21am
Wil Wheaton recently made a case for the use of bittorent. What I found particularly interesting was actually a comment left by somebody that gives some resources for content that is great to cache:
An offline version of wikipedia that has been edited for school use
and
A collection of books housed by the gutenburg project.
I think I need to setup a bittorrent server and add myself as a permanent seed for these as well.

Filter out sites that are annoying in a Google Search
daniel Wed, 11/17/2010 - 9:05pm
Some spammers are now scraping knowledge base websites and reformatting them in order to display adds. If you find them as annoying as I do, you can do the following.
Add a -site:name.com to the google search.
Unfortunately, it has to be done every time you query.
For example, my original search:
groovy ant sshexec outputproperty
My revised search:
groovy ant sshexec outputproperty -site:efreedom.com -site:questionhub.com
There, spam gone. I only see this getting worse though... Google needs to do something about this soon (allowing a more permanent per user blacklist would be nice) to avoid search results becoming less useful. I don't want to see some spammers mashup, I want to see the original site.
A discussion on stackoverflow about the problem.
